ChatGPT Remains No.1 in Nigeria as U.S. Users Switch to Claude

While many Americans are deleting ChatGPT, Nigerians are still downloading it.

The shift began after OpenAI reportedly accepted a $200 billion contract linked to the U.S. Pentagon. The decision sparked backlash in the United States, pushing some users toward Claude, a rival AI chatbot developed by Anthropic.

But in Nigeria, the story is different. ChatGPT remains the No. 1 free app on the Apple App Store.

    Key Highlights

    • ChatGPT lost its No. 1 spot in the U.S. after backlash over a Pentagon-linked deal.
    • Claude briefly overtook ChatGPT in daily U.S. downloads and rose to No. 1 in several countries.
    • In Nigeria, ChatGPT remains dominant, with no major surge in Claude downloads.

Why Americans Are Moving Away from ChatGPT

According to The Condia, the controversy started when OpenAI reportedly accepted a major U.S. defense contract valued at about $200 billion.

At the same time, Anthropic the company behind Claude reportedly rejected a similar offer.

The move raised concerns among some Americans about surveillance and the possible use of artificial intelligence in military operations. Online debates quickly followed.

Many U.S. users began uninstalling ChatGPT. One-star reviews increased sharply, while five-star ratings dropped by nearly 50%.

Claude also introduced a feature allowing users to transfer their data from ChatGPT, making it easier to switch. For the first time, Claude’s daily downloads in the U.S. surpassed ChatGPT’s.

Social media campaigns encouraged users to delete ChatGPT. On Instagram and Reddit, posts criticizing the app gained thousands of followers and upvotes.

Claude later climbed to the No. 1 free iPhone app position in countries like Belgium, Canada, Germany, Luxembourg, Norway, and Switzerland.

Why Nigeria Is Not Following the Same Trend

In Nigeria, the reaction has been calm.

ChatGPT remains the top free app on the Nigerian Apple App Store. Claude has not seen a similar surge in downloads locally.

One reason may be distance from U.S. politics. For many Nigerians, the Pentagon deal is seen as an American issue. Most users here view ChatGPT as a study, research, or business tool not a defense platform.

Data supports this strong adoption. A joint report by Google and Ipsos found that 88% of Nigerian adults have used an AI chatbot. That is far above the global average of 62%.

The report also revealed that 93% of Nigerian companies using AI apply it to improve business operations.

In simple terms, Nigerians are focused on what the tool can do not the politics behind it.

    Performance Over Politics

Nigeria has a history of organizing online boycotts. Public figures like Naira Marley and companies like PayPal have faced backlash before.

    Yet this situation feels different.

For many Nigerian users, AI tools are practical assets. They help with writing, coding, content creation, exam preparation, and business support. Switching platforms is often about performance, speed, and ease of use.

Some tech-savvy Nigerians are exploring Claude for its writing tone and coding features. However, this interest has not changed national app rankings.

What This Means for Africa’s AI Market

Anthropic is expanding globally. In March 2026, it signed a memorandum of understanding with Rwanda and strengthened ties with Google Cloud.

If Claude positions itself as a privacy-focused alternative, it may attract African governments and large businesses concerned about data protection.

For now, however, the AI debate playing out in the United States is not unfolding the same way in Nigeria.

While Americans are reacting strongly to corporate decisions, Nigerian users appear focused on value and functionality.

ChatGPT remains firmly in control of the local market.

Global tech controversies do not always affect every region equally.
