Bobrisky Sentenced to Jail: Here’s Why He’s Spending 6 Months Behind Bars

Popular Nigerian social media personality Bobrisky, known for his flamboyant style, has landed himself in hot water. The Federal High Court of Lagos recently sentenced him to 6 (six) months in prison for what they’ve deemed “Naira abuse.”

    Let’s break down the details.

The Breakdown: Cash, Dates, and Locations

The Economic and Financial Crimes Commission (EFCC) originally charged Bobrisky with six counts related to handling Nigerian currency, the naira. These charges stemmed from several incidents where Bobrisky was seen on social media spraying large amounts of Nigerian Naira (the national currency).

Here’s a breakdown of the specific accusations:

    1. March 24th, 2024: Bobrisky allegedly sprayed N400,000 (Four Hundred Thousand Naira) at imax Circle Mall, Jakande, Lekki.
    2. July/August 2023: Bobrisky is accused of tampering with N50,000 (Fifty Thousand Naira)  in cash at a social gathering in Aja Junction, Korodu.
    3. December 2023: Bobrisky reportedly sprayed N20,000 (Twenty Thousand Naira) Naira notes at a social gathering in White Steve Event Hall Ikeja.
    4. Possibly 2022: the crossdresser Tampering with another N20,000 (Twenty Thousand Naira) at an Event Hall, Oniru, Victory Island

The Court’s Decision – Two Charges Dropped

The court ruled that Bobrisky’s actions violated Section 21(1) of the Central Bank Act, 2007, which prohibits tampering with Nigerian currency.

Bobrisky ultimately pleaded guilty to four of these charges, admitting to disrespecting the Nigerian currency.

    However,

two of the allegations were dropped.

Sentence Delivered – Deterrence and Start Date

Despite pleading for leniency as a first-time offender, Bobrisky was sentenced to six months in prison by Justice Abimbola Awogboro.

The judge made it clear that his sentence serves as a deterrent to others who might misuse or damage Nigerian currency. Bobrisky’s jail term began on the day of his arrest, March 24, 2024.

    A Lesson Learned

This case sends a clear message: respect your currency! Bobrisky’s social media antics landed him in jail, highlighting the importance of responsible behavior online and off.
