NELFUND loans have become a hot topic among students and institutions in Nigeria. Here’s why NANS is calling for stricter monitoring of these loan funds.
- NANS demands oversight on NELFUND loan usage in tertiary institutions.
- Students oppose any hike in school fees across public schools.
- NANS encourages eligible students to apply for transparent NELFUND support.
The National Association of Nigerian Students (NANS) has urged the Federal Government to closely monitor how Nigeria’s Education Loan Fund (NELFUND) loans are being used in tertiary institutions.
Speaking at the 86th National Senate Sitting of NANS, held at Lagos State University (LASU), Senate President Babatunde Afeez Akinteye emphasized the importance of accountability.
“it is not enough to give schools billions of Naira in the name of NELFUND loans without the government following it up to know how schools are utilising the funds” Akinteye said.
He stressed that monitoring is critical to ensuring these loans effectively enhance education in the country.
Over 5,000 student leaders from various campuses attended the event. Akinteye addressed concerns about potential increases in school fees, firmly opposing any hikes.

We won’t accept that and we have made this known to every VC, rector and provost of colleges of education and we’re following up closely on our stand.” he added.
stating that NANS is actively engaging with university vice-chancellors, rectors, and college provosts to maintain this stance.
NANS National President Lucky Emonefe echoed Akinteye’s concerns and commended students for their continued support.
