Nigeria’s film industry, Nollywood, is grappling with the tragic loss of popular actor Junior Pope Odonwodo, following a boating accident on the River Niger on Wednesday, April 10th, 2024. The tragic news, which has sent shockwaves through the industry and amongst fans.
Initial reports sparked confusion with claims of Junior Pope still alive, but the Delta State Chairman of the Actors Guild of Nigeria AGN, Emma Onyemeziem later confirmed Junior Pope is dead after valiant efforts to revive him failed.
The cause of the accident remains under investigation. Tributes have poured in for the 39-year-old actor, with many searching online for answers: what happened to Actor Junior Pope, is Jnr Pope dead or alive.
The accident occurred while Odonwodo, along with other cast and crew members, were returning by boat from a filming location. The exact details surrounding the capsizing of the boat are unclear.
News of the tragedy spread quickly, with social media flooded with questions if he’s still alive. However, in a heartbreaking turn of events, Emeka Rollas, National President of the AGN, expressed his deep sadness in a social media post.
“It is with a heavy heart that I announce the passing of our beloved colleague, Junior Pope Odonwodo,” he wrote. “This is a huge loss to Nollywood, and our thoughts and prayers are with his family during this difficult time.”
Junior Pope’s roots trace back to the town of Ukehe, Nsukka in Enugu State, though he was born and raised in Bamenda, Cameroon, under the loving guidance of Mr. and Mrs. Luke Odonwodo. He was known for his charismatic performances in numerous Nollywood films.

The confusion surrounding Odonwodo’s condition stemmed from initial reports he’s alive being refuted by the AGN. This was based on signs of life detected after Junior Pope was involved in a boat capsizing incident in Anam River, Anambra State.
Unfortunately,
despite efforts at three different hospitals, Junior Pope could not be revived. The cause of death is attributed to the drowning incident.
Tributes have poured in on social media, with many expressing their grief for the talented actor and the loss to Nollywood.
