Wike Applauds Okowa, Oborevwori for Joining APC: “Tinubu’s Leadership Is Working”
In a major political realignment, Delta State’s top political figures have crossed party lines to pledge allegiance to President Bola Tinubu.
Former Delta State governor and PDP vice presidential candidate in the 2023 elections, Dr. Ifeanyi Okowa, along with incumbent Governor Sheriff Oborevwori and several other prominent PDP stalwarts, have defected to the ruling All Progressives Congress (APC).
Their decision to abandon the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) and collapse its political structures in Delta into the APC was met with applause by the Minister of the Federal Capital Territory (FCT), Nyesom Wike.
The move, announced Wednesday, was confirmed via a statement released by Wike’s Senior Special Assistant on Public Communication and Social Media, Mr. Lere Olayinka.

Okowa’s open endorsement of Tinubu is
“a vindication of the position I took in 2023, ”
Wike said
“which was based on the interest of a united Nigeria.”
Wike, a prominent PDP figure turned APC supporter himself, has long positioned his allegiance to Tinubu as an act of patriotism rather than partisanship.
He described the defections as “heart-warming” and “timely,” asserting that Tinubu’s governance record speaks for itself.
“They have come out at the right time to show support for Mr. President so that the people of Niger Delta can benefit more from the government, and I commend them.” Wike added.
The minister argued that the current administration’s developmental strides and dedication to national unity are winning over former critics. He stressed that others who remain undecided should now reconsider their stance.
“What I saw before the 2023 presidential election, others are now seeing and are joining the ‘Renewed Hope’ train,” the minister said.
The political shake-up in Delta could significantly alter the dynamics ahead of future elections, especially in the South-South region, where PDP has traditionally held sway.

Wike’s endorsement of Tinubu has remained consistent since the 2023 elections, and this latest wave of support from Okowa and Governor Oborevwori may signify deeper cracks within the PDP, particularly at the state level.
As realignments continue across Nigeria’s political landscape, Wike’s message is clear: get on board with the president or risk being left behind.
